A visual response to a series of truths, stories and memories
TESTIMONY
Lesley Cherry
7 – 28 October
Exhibition launch: Saturday 7 October, 12noon. Free admission, everyone welcome.
A visual response to a series of truths, stories and memories as told by a group of women as they worked with socially engaged artist Lesley Cherry over the past year.
Cherry continues her interpretation of these stories of domesticity, empowerment, class, culture, and secrets through her use of pattern, found objects, text, and mixed media. The work is open to interpretation and speculation, all entwined with a fragile beauty in her use of wallpaper, paper dollies, lace, collage, paint and mark-making, and often incorporating a sense of humour and kitchness to the work, despite the serious issues being addressed.
Cherry studied at the University of Ulster, Belfast gaining her BA Hons in Fine & Applied Art and graduated from the Master of Fine Art course in 2011. She received the ARCH Development Residency, Washington DC, in 2012 and was awarded the ACNI Artists Career Enhancement prize in 2013/14. She was invited to present at the Engage Summer School Residency in Padua, Italy in 2013 and was a guest of the Ernő Tolvaly Artists Residency, Hungary, in August 2014. Her work has been shown widely throughout Ireland including The Golden Thread Galley, Belfast, VOID Derry, Artslink, Buncrana and Sligo Art Centre.
Testimony was made possible by support from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and Flax Artists Studios.
