Roe Valley Arts and Cultural Centre is set to host a new exhibition by celebrated poet and visual artist John Brown.

Birds with No Passports blends art and poetry together as it reflects upon the intriguing differences between humans and birds.

The Limavady artist, is known for his profound contribution to literature and visual arts having previously held the role of Literary Arts Officer for the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. He was also the chief organiser of the Belfast Literary Festival Between the Lines.

In his latest book, W.B. Yeats, Samuel Beckett, Fine Art, he explored the intersections of literature and visual arts.

Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens, Councillor Steven Callaghan said: “I am looking forward to visiting this new exhibition and it’s particularly interesting for me as John comes from Limavady.

“Council’s Arts team is always keen to acknowledge and support the fantastic literary and artistic talents that the Borough has produced, and John Brown is another fantastic addition.

“I would encourage you to go along and see this very thought-provoking exhibition.”

A blend of poetry and visual art Birds with No Passports explores themes of love, death, migration, borders, and ecology. Examining how birds and humans both navigate these complex experiences.

Through humour and with poignant observations John challenges the assumption that humans are more intelligent than birds and his art poses intriguing questions.

Encompassing an array of drawings, collages, mixed media works and sculptures crafted from found objects, with each piece capturing the essence of real and imagined birds.

The exhibition is set to open on Saturday 1st June at 3pm, visitors will be treated to a short reading from John Brown of an extract from his new book and a firsthand introduction to his artwork from the artist himself.

Birds with No Passports exhibition is on display from the 1st June until the 27th July.
