Last week we were delighted to welcome Ellen for a week of work experience.

During her placement, Ellen spent time with staff across the building, gaining an insight into the wide range of roles involved in running a busy and successful arts centre. She shadowed our front-of-house team, administration, technical, operations and programming staff, experiencing everything from welcoming visitors and supporting events to learning about exhibition planning, venue operations and creative programming.

Ellen attended planning meetings, helped prepare for the exhibition launch featuring the work of pupils from Rossmar School, and contributed ideas for upcoming projects, including activities for our tent of Creativity at Stendhal Festival this July. She also carried out research for future programmes, giving her a hands-on experience of both the creative and practical aspects of arts centre life.

We have thoroughly enjoyed having Ellen as part of the team this week and have been impressed by her enthusiasm, creativity and willingness to get involved.

Read on to hear about her experience at Roe Valley Arts Centre in her own words.

What made you choose Roe Valley Art Centre for your work experience placement?

I chose Roe Valley Arts Centre because I am interested in art and creativity, and I wanted to learn more about how an art centre works behind the scenes.

What were your first impressions when you arrived?

My first impressions were that the staff were welcoming and friendly. The building felt creative with lots of interesting activities going on.

Have you learned any new skills?

I have gained knowledge and experience helping with events and creative activities.

Learning and Development

What has surprised you the most about working in an Arts Centre?

For me, I was surprised by how much planning and preparation is needed for exhibitions, workshops and events. There is a lot more work involved than work people see.

Have you gained any insights into careers in the arts and creative industries?

Yes, I have learned that there are many different careers in art for example event management or technical support.

How has this experience helped you develop your confidence or creativity?

This experience has helped me become more confident in speaking to staff and visitors, as well as more open to trying new things.

Future Plans

Do you hope to continue studying art or a creative subject after school?

After A-Levels, I hope to study Fine Art or Textiles at Ulster University.

What are your career aspirations?

In the future, I hope to become an art teacher in a secondary school.

Has this placement influenced your future plans in a way?

Yes, this placement has gave me a better understanding of how art organisations work and has encouraged me to continue studying art in the future.

Reflections

How would you sum up your experience at Row Valley Arts Centre in three words?

Creative, inspiring and enjoyable.

What will you take away from this experience?

I will take away new skills, increased confidence and a better understanding of careers in art.

Fun Questions

If you could create an exhibition on any theme, what would it be and why?

It would create an exhibition about nature and the environment because I enjoy painting landscapes. It would encourage people to appreciate the beauty of nature and think about protecting it.

What is your favourite artwork, artist or creative inspiration at the moment?

At the minute, my biggest inspiration is a Belfast based artist, called Joseph Lynch, who primarly focuses on landscapes and nature inspired pieces. His paintings are usually of Northern Irish countryside. He works on canvas with acrylics. His work appeals to me as his style captures mood and atmosphere by using colour in a way to create amazing light.
