On Tuesday 21 January, we hosted a captivating lunchtime concert, part of our festivities leading up to Burns Night. The event featured the remarkable mezzo-soprano Carolyn Dobbin and the accomplished pianist Tristan Russcher, who guided attendees through a rich tapestry of Ulster-Scots song for an hour filled with musical delight and insightful commentary.

Thanks to financial support from The Executive Office and the Good Relations Programme of Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council, this cabaret-style event not only showcased beautiful melodies but also brought to life the folklore, myths, legends and tradition embedded in Ulster-Scots culture.

Carolyn Dobbin, a graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and an experienced soloist with organisations such as the Welsh National Opera and Luzern Theatre in Switzerland, enchanted the audience with her powerful vocals. Tristan Russcher, one of Ireland's leading keyboard musicians, complemented her performance with his exceptional piano skills. The Australian-born musician has made a significant impact in the UK and Ireland, regularly gracing the airwaves on BBC Radio 3 and RTÉ Lyric.

The event was fully booked well ahead of Burns Night, reflecting a keen interest in this cultural celebration. Attendees enjoyed beloved Ulster-Scots classics, including the poignant "My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose," and concluded the performance with a rousing rendition of “Auld Lang Syne,” inviting everyone to join in the festivities. Feedback from participants highlighted the event as both informative and enjoyable. Many expressed that, despite their prior knowledge of Robert Burns, they still walked away having learned something new.

As we look forward to future cultural gatherings, it is clear that the celebration of Ulster-Scots heritage continues to resonate within our community, enriching our understanding and appreciation of this vibrant cultural legacy.
