7th March 2025

As winter fades and spring starts to bloom, Flowerfield and Roe Valley Arts Centres are bursting with creative and cultural opportunities this March! With a fantastic mix of exhibitions, music, theatre, and hands-on workshops, it’s the perfect time to try something new.
At Flowerfield, things kick off with The Way I See It (8th March – 26th April), a striking collection of 26 unique photographic viewpoints by women associated with Causeway & Mid Ulster Women’s Aid. Each image offers a personal glimpse into life from the perspective of its creator. Join us for the launch event on 8th March at 12pm, featuring speakers from Women’s Aid and poet Anne McMaster.
Another powerful exhibition at Flowerfield is Thin Place by Bob Speers (opening night: Sat 15th March). This stunning exhibition transforms boglands into textured, abstract landscapes, blending materials from Irish peatlands with fabric and paint. Bob will be there on opening night to share insights into his work—and even perform music inspired by his wanderings through Irish boglands!
If you’re fascinated by the mysteries of bogs, don’t miss Professor Jonathan Pilcher’s talk (Wed 19th March), where he’ll dive into their history, ecology, and myths. Feeling inspired? Natasha Duddy’s fused glass workshop (Sat 15 March) lets you create your own shimmering bogland-inspired artwork.
Music and theatre fans have plenty to look forward to as well. Ottilie (22nd March) tells the story of one of Northern Ireland’s most prolific blues artists, while One Mountain: Sold (28th March) brings together poetry from Cherry Smyth and music from vocalist Lauren Kinsella. And if you love classic films, the Monday Matinee series presents An Affair to Remember (31st March)—a perfect excuse for a nostalgic escape!
Over at Roe Valley Arts Centre, there’s something for everyone. Big Doodles and Wee Doodles by John McMacken (from 3 April) is a vibrant, playful exhibition that mixes abstract art with storytelling. In association with this workshops kids (7-11 yrs) can join us for a Doodle Party with the artist, where their imaginations can run wild as they blend art and play to create. Fancy something hands-on? The Bake & Bond workshop (8th March) is a chance to learn traditional Irish griddle breadmaking—rolling, kneading, and even churning your own butter for a real taste of heritage.
Jewellery lovers will enjoy Diane Lyness’s silversmithing workshop (Sat 29th March), where you’ll craft your own sterling silver bracelet using traditional techniques. And if you’re in the mood to get creative with flowers, Elaine Taylor’s Easter Wreath Makingworkshop (16th April) is a lovely way to bring the beauty of spring indoors.
For kids, there’s loads of fun to be had. At Flowerfield, the Weekend Wondersworkshops (9th & 23rd March) will celebrate Irish Language Week and Mother’s Day with fantastic creative activities. There are also clay workshops (16th March) where kids can sculpt festive St. Patrick’s Day Clay creations. Meanwhile, Roe Valley’s World Book Day potion-making adventure (7th March) promises a magical mix of storytelling and science!
