21st January 2025

This January, Roe Valley Arts Centre in Limavady is delighted to present a series of events that celebrate the rich Ulster Scots heritage, supported by The Executive Office through Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council’s Good Relations Programme. These events provide unique opportunities to engage with this vibrant cultural tradition.
Frae Folk to Finale: The Ulster Scots Sang Journey (Tuesday 21 January) invites you to a relaxing lunchtime concert featuring mezzo soprano Carolyn Dobbin and pianist Tristan Russcher. They’ll take you on a musical journey through the evolution of Ulster Scots song, sharing insights and performing beautiful pieces that capture the essence of this tradition. As Burns Night approaches, this is the perfect opportunity to explore the musical roots of the Ulster Scots community in a captivating and informative setting.
Bites of Burns: A Tasty Toast to Tradition (Thursday 23 January) is an interactive cooking class where you’ll learn to create classic Scottish dishes in celebration of Burns Night. Led by Erin Bunting from The Edible Flower, this workshop will teach you how to make Cullen Skink, neeps and tatties, and the famous Cranachan dessert, among others. Not only will you enjoy tastings throughout the evening, but Erin will also share the customs and cultural significance of these dishes, leaving you with everything you need to host your own Burns Night supper.
Embroider a Thistle Brooch (Saturday 25 January) invites you to discover the craft of embroidery while creating a beautiful thistle brooch. Under the guidance of tutor Lorna Shannon, you’ll use long and short stitch, French knots, and free stitching techniques to bring the iconic thistle to life in 3D. This hands-on workshop is a wonderful way to connect with Ulster Scots symbolism while exploring your creativity.
These activities have received financial support from The Executive Office through Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council’s Good Relations Programme.
